When the North Dakota legislature convenes in Bismarck, starting with its organizational session in December 2022, and the 80 days of regular session from January through April 2023, Odney Public Affairs will be navigating beyond the complexities of government relations and into regulatory or policy changes. That’s when we put over 50 years of combined experience in public affairs and lobbying to work for our clients. With access to all the expertise in Odney’s tool chest, our team will provide a broad range of legislative services ranging from tracking legislation to developing, advancing and achieving legislative goals.
Legislative Assistant - Job Overview
We need a self-motivated team player to join our Odney Public Affairs team – part-time in December 2022 and full-time from January and into May 2023. The Legislative Assistant helps develop and execute legislative strategy, tracks bills, observes hearings and floor sessions, testifies when needed, prepares client reports, and enables the Public Affairs team to stay organized and on top of our clients’ needs. The position is based in our Bismarck office with most of the time spent at the Capitol and offers a salary higher than those working for legislative committees during the same time frame.
Responsibilities
- Be a daily connection between our team and our clients, under the direction of the Odney Public Affairs Team of Shane Goettle and Don Larson.
- Meet and get acquainted with legislators, legislative council, legislative committee personnel, and key executive branch officials.
- Work with the legislative bill tracking system.
- Proficient with Microsoft Excel, Windows, and Outlook.
- Assist in preparing testimony and exhibits for hearings.
- Assist in preparing clients updates and reports through both in-person and virtual conferences, as well as through emails and written reports. Tactics to keep clients informed vary depending on the client.
- Assist in preparing a final summary of the legislative session (May 2023).
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Aptitude for and interest in the legislative process and politics
- Outstanding communication skills, both verbal and written
- Ability to take notes, chronical hearings and floor sessions, and deliver testimony when needed
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
- Capable of multi-tasking, prioritizing and managing time efficiently
- Ability to work well under pressure, and for extended hours
- Detail-oriented and ability to meet deadlines
- Excellent proofreading skills
