What does it take to be tops in Twitter? A recent article in the Forum of Fargo-Moorhead listed the top Twitter users in the Fargo area and in North Dakota, and talked to some of them about the power of Twitter and what it takes to be on top.
So, from someone who ranks number 15 on the list, and who's also consulted with two other clients in the top spots - North... more

Compartmentalization vs. Convergence

From the point of view of advertisers and marketers, the industry seems to have become increasingly fragmented over the past few years, with channels of communication rapidly multiplying. From the point of view of consumers, it's not about the channels. It's about the content and the message, whether it's delivered on a TV screen, laptop, tablet, smartphone, print magazine, billboard, newspaper or point of purchase display.
For marketers, it's easy to think in compartmentalized terms of... more

Marketing is very simple. Put the right message in front of the right audience at the right time and you have the blueprint for a successful campaign. But what if you have one of those three elements wrong? The result is an unsuccessful campaign and worse yet, a wasted budget.
All three elements rely on one very important detail: your audience. Who are they and what motivates them? Where do they spend their time and... more

When Technology Becomes Behavior

Technology has increased the speed at which we can communicate as well as the number of people we can communicate with, but for a moment let's disregard the actual physical items that we might picture when we hear the word. Let's look at the broad definition of technology and assume that everything that has been created is in some way, or at least at one time, was considered technology.
Everything considered ground-breaking in the past that's... more

After seeing my name on Evan Carmichael's list of top 100 PR experts on Twitter, people have been asking if I have any Twitter tips. If you're new to Twitter or other social media channels, start by listening. Twitter is much like cable television or talk radio - keep surfing through the channels until you find what you're interested in. Listen in and join the conversations when you are comfortable.
1. Know your target audience... more

"Let's measure how we're doing in social media." Sounds simple, right? But many companies have a problem defining what success in social media means for them. Is it your number of friends/followers, number of interactions, web traffic, site memberships, or are you measuring success at your cash register? The biggest mistake in social media can happen even before you start to create a presence. Define your goals first, and those goals will help you determine... more

Net Neutrality

The internet is blind, and it should stay that way. By that I mean its infrastructure should remain a blind carrier of information packets. The internet has operated under "net neutrality," meaning that all data packets are created equal. Packets from web site A go whizzing down the line right along with packets from web site B. Net neutrality has been a driving force for innovation, as little guys with the best ideas, best products... more

You're now on Facebook, even if you're not on Facebook. The social networking site recently introduced a new feature called "community pages." These pages aren't created by individuals, companies or organizations. They're compiled automatically by Facebook, using information from the site as well as Wikipedia and other sources.
Here's how it works. Let's say you want to find a company on Facebook, so you use the site's search function. The results show an official Facebook... more

Facebook, from the very beginning, has always been about the user. From its barren yet easy-to-use interface to its unobtrusive ads. Facebook is what I have considered the "killer app" in social media. But has it begun to go astray?
In the past few months we have seen a myriad of changes on everything from Facebook's privacy policy to its layout. Facebook has always been able to take the heat its changes bring, roll with the... more

Keeping up with a variety of social media channels can be time-consuming. One way to streamline your social media strategy is to take advantage of automated processes. For example, news items posted to your website can be "pushed out" to various other online destinations. You enter your news item once, and it automatically appears across multiple channels.
For some channels, such as Twitter, you'll want to edit the latest news to fit the format, in... more

Don't put your eggs (or your messages) all in one basket

This week saw hackers attack two of the social networks most used and most admired - Twitter and Facebook -- causing issues for users worldwide. While I don't condone hacking, the perpetrators did us a favor. They reminded us that you cannot rely on one communications channel (no matter how hot) to get your message out. You will have much better results if you use multiple communications channels to get your message to... more

If you're planning a big contest or promotion, you should use that to drive traffic to your website, right? Not necessarily. A better strategy might be to create a separate site dedicated to your contest. It's all about the focus.
We've developed separate sites for contests and promotions for the National Sunflower Association, SRT Communications, and I. Keating Furniture World. The contest sites were focused on specific target audiences and invited participation... more
